I could finish the painting just before dark.

Small paintings are not necessarily easier.
It's good to adjust your 'setting' or subject to the size of the canvas or vice versa.

I like to paint the subject at 110% most often. (Not painting miniatures: not a full bouquet on a small size panel, but I paint the flowers 'real size' or slightly bigger than real size.)
