Painting Cows in Summer

Clearly Summer!

This was painted when ahead there was a music festival, far away but you could hear sounds, for two days, and on the second day I painted this one.

You’d think a small painting takes a shorter amount of time than a midsize, but no, this one took 5 hours. That’s on the long side I would say. The painting is of course worth it, but the back, when standing, and all other chores for the day… well, sometimes it’s just the way it is.

Time & Focus

Normally, I think the attention-span should be around the 2-3 hours. You'll be sharpest, and you'll have the focus and your energy is highest. After 3 hours most artists start to change the good stuff on the painting: a sign you're losing 'focus'. We (outdoor painters) need to 'say it', having strong concentration & focus, and then leave it alone I think.

To my students I always say "You cannot say everything or implement all ideas in 1 painting. t's better to just paint more/more often and don't paint endlessly on 1 painting."

Realism, Abstraction

In the video I explain how ‘realism’ has to do with color mostly.
If we want to simplify and yet catch that realistic spark, we need to paint ‘the light’.

Often I don’t bring the phone, who needs ‘interference’, but sometimes I also forget to bring the camera. But from the scenepic you can see the row of trees I’m standing under, and thus having a ‘see-through’ and the grass gets its shadow strip.

Color is the Key

Shadows are half of the light-play of course!
A good shadow creates beautiful light in a painting : )
