I think you'll get better and better results when you can commit to paint such views more than once. Often you'll 'feel it' in the third time around, and this will also give room to experiment more, with simplifying the scene, with choosing colors, within the time you have when standing there.
It's also good to see how creating an 'abstracted view' can be enough to be happy with. Very different from a 'photorealistic painting', the essence is there in abstraction. I like this way of seeing a scene, and it's great to be painting this way. It can be liberating.
