What Is White?

Morning Colors On The Beach.

Such a strong painting. But hard to photograph.

More and more I play with soft value differences. For example, a light orange sun might be of the same value in a greys part of a sky: the camera will change this contrast, to the opposite looking darker: the sun. And that’s not how you painted it.

You’ll notice these things when making photos of your paintings, and especially when you’re getting ‘pickier’ - or - more color-sensitive over time.
I talk about this, and much more in PleinairMastery ‘Painting in Flow of the Moment!', my book, get a copy here.

So much color can be found in things we think are 'white'.
White, just as Black should be avoided to be applied unmixed I think.
Your paintings will get better when you avoid applying 'white straight from the tube'.
